Road rule changes to improve motoring safety
Changes to Northern Territory road rules come into effect today to create a safer road environment. Most of the modifications are only slight variations that clarify the details of 80 existing rules. The key changes include: SEATBELTS: The driver is to ensure that all passengers in the car are wearing a seatbelt. If all the seatbelts are in use no extra unrestrained passengers can travel in the vehicle.

Back to School - Watch Out, Slow Down
Children return to school on Tuesday 31 January 2012. Motorists are reminded to slow down, watch for
children, and observe the 40 km/h zone speed limit near schools between 7am and 5pm.

New transit centre opens at Humpty Doo
A new $900,000 park and ride bus interchange has opened at Humpty Doo. The new park and ride facility will offer 12 bus travel options per weekday, as well as six on Saturday. Rural area residents will pay $4 for a standard return trip to the Darwin and Palmerston CBD, enjoy free bus services to big events such as the Darwin Show and have the option to leave their car at the secure site. Increased heavy vehicle traffic on NT highways
Due to the recent damage to the Edith River Rail Bridge near Katherine, there is likely to be an increase in heavy vehicles using the Stuart Highway. Road users are reminded of the need to safely share our roads and highways with trucks and road trains. Please be aware of the increased number of these vehicles until the rail bridge is open. New $17 million bridge for Darwin now open
A new $17 million rail overpass fully opened to traffic for the first time today, allowing uninterrupted access to the growing East Arm industrial hub.
Chief Minister Paul Henderson and Senator Trish Crossin, representing Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese, officially opened the new four lane, two way traffic bridge which will redirect up to 4000 heavy vehicles a day. Media Release
New ferry service a win for locals
Cox Peninsula locals will benefit from a new ferry service between Mandorah and Cullen Bay from 1 January 2012.
Minister for Transport Gerry McCarthy said a licence agreement reached with Fast Ferries Pty Ltd delivers free travel at all times for school students and seniors who live on the Cox Peninsula.
"The Department of Lands and Planning has signed a two-year licence with Fast Ferries to support the Mandorah to Cullen Bay ferry service with new conditions that benefit the most regular users," Mr McCarthy said. Read the Media Release
Cullen Bay Sea Wall Maintenance Works
December project update -
Maintenance works to the sea wall continues.
To ensure the ongoing working life of the lock, maintenance works continue on the sea wall.
The works are being planned to have minimal impact on residents, businesses, commuters and the public.
Some parking remains unavailable and for safety reasons, so is unleaded fuel.

Major upgrade underway to Jenkins Road
Construction is underway on a major upgrade to Jenkins Road to provide better access to the new city of Weddell and future oil and gas developments at Middle Arm. Construction has started on a $1.3 million project for new traffic lights at the intersection of Stuart Highway and Jenkins Road. This is on top of two-staged $14 million project already underway to seal fourteen kilometres of Jenkins Road from Stuart Highwayto Finn Road, and Finn Road to Channel Island Road, jointly funded by the Territory Government and the Ichthys LNG Project. Christmas Road Safety Campaign – Who's your Sober Bob?
All Territorians are being urged to stay safe on our roads over the festive season by planning ahead All Territorians are being urged to stay safe on our roads over the festive season by planning ahead and organising a sober driver. Party goers are reminded that there are many sober bob’s to call upon to get you home safely, it can be a bus driver, taxi driver or a friend or relative coming from home. Free soft drinks at participating venues.
Those party goers that are heading out in the city can catch the Christmas Express shuttle bus from a new secure pick up point. The Express will run from 26 November and every Saturday and Sunday night up until Christmas day. Fares are set at $5 Darwin City, $10 northern suburbs and $15 Palmerston, and will drop you to your door step. The new secure pick up point is located on Mitchell street at the bus stop opposite Kitty O’Sheas.

Families and commuters set to benefit from safer pedestrian facility on McMillans Road
A new pedestrian facility will be built on McMillans Road to provide families with a better, safer walking route across the road.
Minister for Lands and Planning said the Territory Government is investing in the new pedestrian facility following feedback from the community.

NT Police vehicles to carry specialised road saftey numberplates
Police Traffic vehicles across the Northern Territory will now display specialised number plates carrying road safety messages, Minister for Transport, Gerry McCarthy announced on Thursday 6 October 2011.
30 number plates will be fitted to police traffic vehicles and some emergency vehicles across Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs to spread the word about road safety.

Construction progressing on new $22.6 million Daly River Bridge
A major construction milestone has been reached on the new $22.6 million Daly River Bridge with more than 50,000 cubic metres of road material moved to the site, the Member for Daly Rob Knight said.

New $1.8 million park and ride facility to take cars off the road
Minister for Transport, Gerry McCarthy said the new environmentally friendly facility is a Territory first and will provide commuters with the option of leaving the car or bike behind and taking advantage of public transport into Palmerston and Darwin CBD from the rural area.
“This is a $1.8 million investment into reaching our Territory 2030 target to reduce the impact on the environment through reducing reliance on private motor vehicles.

$17 million new bridge for Darwin - 24 August 2011
Construction is underway on a new $17 million Berrimah Road Railway Overpass that will benefit more than 4000 vehicles a day.
"The $17 million new Berrimah Bridge is part of my Government's plan to keep the Territory heading in the right direction," Chief Minister Paul Henderson said.
"People passing it on their way to work can literally see the Territory growing each day.

Darwin Region Heavy Vehicle Taskforce Report released
A joint industry and Government report will improve road safety by ensuring we safely share our roads with heavy vehicles.
The Darwin Region Heavy Vehicle Taskforce Report contains 29 recommendations. Government will move to deliver on a number of the report's recommendations in the short term while carefully considering all 29 recommendations in the report.
