Requirements to Become a Driving Instructor

To become a Driving Instructor in the NT you need to have held the relevant class of licence for a period of three (3) consecutive years immediately prior to application. You will also need to:

  1. be certified as medically fit by a medical practitioner (in accordance with the Commercial Standards of the nationally agreed guidelines “Assessing Fitness to Drive”);
  2. pass a Police traffic and criminal history check, (the National Police Clearance and Complete Traffic History checks can be arranged through Safe NT or your local Police Station, clearly identifying that an employment check is required for the profession of a Driving Instructor);  and,
  3. you must complete the required training course delivered by an Approved course provider (listed below are local NT providers and a link to interstate Accredited providers).

Driving Instructors are to comply with the Code of Practice for Driving Instructors in the NT.

There are currently two training courses (qualifications) that will allow you to become a driving instructor in the NT and these are:

  • TLI41210 Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics (Road Transport – Car Driving Instruction)
  • TLI41310 Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics (Road Transport – Heavy Vehicle Driving Instruction)
Only qualifications issued by an accreditated course provider will be accepted for the issue of a Northern Territory Driving Instructor endorsement. Qualifications issued by non-accreditated course providers will not be recognised as the course may not have been conducted to the standard required by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

Pre-Approval

Prior to commencing any training activity towards a Driving Instructor Qualification TLI41210 or TLI41310, applicants must receive Pre-Approval from MVR.  The Pre-Approval process involves checks against your Medical Fitness, Police criminal and traffic offence history, driver licence history, and verification that your Course Provider is Accredited.

Pre- Approved applicants are assured that their Qualification, when obtained, will be recognised by MVR for the granting of a Driving Instructors Endorsement.  Applicants who have not been Pre-Approved may not have their Qualification recognised.

Interstate Course Providers

The Registrar of Motor Vehicles will only recognise TLI41210 and TLI41310 Certificates issued by interstate course providers that have a current ‘Deed of Accreditation’ with the licence regulator in that state/territory. It was agreed nationally that the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services would publish all State and Territory Accredited course providers.  To view Accredited course providers in other jurisdictions please use the following link www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/gettingalicence/drivinginstructors/newinstructors/ instructor_course_providers.html

Mutual Recognition

A person who holds a current Driving Instructor authorisation issued in another Australian state/territory can apply under the Mutual Recognition Act for a Northern Territory driving instructor endorsement without the need for additional training.

Evidence of meeting Northern Territory medical and Police traffic and criminal history requirements will need to be confirmed prior to issuance of a Northern Territory driving instructor endorsement.
