Saved By The Belt

10 December 2010

New billboards reminding motorists to wear seatbelts and to take regular breaks are being erected along two Territory highways as part of a pilot project to raise road safety awareness.

Transport Minister Gerry McCarthy said the billboards will soon be seen in high visibility areas with high traffic numbers along the Stuart Highway north of Alice Springs and near Mataranka, as well as the Victoria Highway near Katherine.

National Road Safety Strategy to Save Territory Lives

Territorians are encouraged to help save lives on our roads by providing their ideas on road safety with the release of the draft National Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020.

Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport, Catherine King, joined Territory Transport Minister Gerry McCarthy, to call on Territorians to have their say on the draft Strategy released by the Australian Transport Council (ATC) today.

Infrastructure Report Welcomed

Construction Minister Gerry McCarthy today welcomed today’s release of the Engineers Australia 2010 Northern Territory Infrastructure Report Card.

Mr McCarthy said the Henderson Government is delivering the biggest infrastructure program in the Territory’s history and building legacy projects to benefit future generations of Territorians.

Marjorie Street to Stay Open

9 November 2010

Construction Minister Gerry McCarthy today said Marjorie Street will remain open to inbound traffic along Roystonea Avenue.

“Government looks forward to continuing to work with the local businesses and the Northern Territory Road Transport Association to reach practical short, medium and long term solutions.”

Mr McCarthy said a further public meeting will be held within a fortnight to update businesses on the proposed revised road traffic plans.

CCTV cameras now in Territory taxis

28 October 2010

CCTV cameras will be in Territory taxis from today with the first systems installed in Darwin taxis.

Minister for Transport, Gerry McCarthy said the Territory Government’s scheme will see taxi owners receive a $3,000 grant to reimburse the cost of the camera and installation.

Territory in National Transport Discussion

Transport Minister Gerry McCarthy will today fly to Melbourne to attend tomorrow’s 32nd meeting of the Australian Transport Council (ATC).

Mr McCarthy said the Territory Government will continue to work with Federal Government towards improving transport in regional and remote parts of the Territory.

“The Territory Government is committed to improving and increasing transport safety and that’s why I welcome the opportunity to lobby on behalf of our transport industry,” Mr McCarthy said.

New Expanded Bus Services To Boost Public Transport

14 September 2010

Transport Minister Gerry McCarthy today announced a boost to public transport in Darwin and Palmerston with the start of new expanded bus services from Monday 4 October 2010.

“The introduction of new semi-express bus services delivers on this Government’s 2008 election commitment to boost public transport and cut waiting times,” Mr McCarthy said.

Two orbital routes will operate during peak periods, as loop services between the Darwin, Palmerston and Casuarina interchanges.

2010 Darwin Boat Show

Fisheries Minister Kon Vatskalis today officially opened open the 2010 Darwin Boat Show at the Darwin Convention Centre.

The boat show is a great opportunity to promote safety messages so that everyone out on the water comes back home safely with a good story to tell of their adventure.

That’s why the Territory Government’s Marine Safety team will be out in force at the boat show this weekend providing show goers with our Safety Guide for Pleasure Craft booklet.

New Public Bus Service For Gove

A public bus service is set to start operating in North East Arnhem Land for the first time.

Transport Minister Gerry McCarthy and Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said the new public bus service - starting in Gove on 6 September - is part of the Territory Government’s working future policy to improve transport in regional and remote areas.
