July 2009 Back to School Road Safety Campaign
As thousands of young Territorians return to school on Tuesday 21 July after their mid-year holiday break, it is timely to remind all road users that a 40 km school zone speed limit applies between 7am and 5pm on school days. Motorists must slow down, always look out for children around schools and expect the unexpected.
Around schools, children’s crossings are the safest way to cross the road. If children ride to school, helmets must be worn.
The Back to School advertising campaign runs from 13 July to 22 July. The campaign consists of print advertising and a radio commercial airing during the mornings and afternoons at school drop-off and pick-up times.

Additonal road safety topics can be found on the Territory's best know road safety ambassador's website - Hector the Road Safety Cat @ www.hectorthecat.nt.gov.au This website can be used as an effective resource to assist teachers in the classroom and can be accessed by children in both urban and remote areas.
Some of the topics covered are:
- Crossing the road safely
- Walking or riding at night
- Wearing seatbelts
- Bicycle safety
- Bus travel
