New Road Rules

On 1 February 2012, there will be some changes to the Northern Territory's road rules. These amendments follow those made at the national level by the Australian Transport Council under the Australian Road Rules and apply to all road users. Changes include the use of fog lights, mobile phones, visual display units and pedestrians crossing the road. Find out more about the new road rules.

Due to the recent damage to the Edith River Rail Bridge North of Katherine there is likely to be an increase in heavy vehicles using the Stuart Highway. Road users are reminded of the need to safely share our roads and highways with trucks and road trains. Please be aware of the increased number of these vehicles until the rail bridge is open. Road trains can be more than 50 metres long and may move around on the road more than other vehicles. Always ensure there is clear road ahead when preparing to overtake. Guidelines for Road Safety Around Schools

The new Guidelines for Road Safety Around Schools are now available online. Local governments, schools, schools councils, parents and interested organisations can now access the guidelines. They have been produced for the express purpose of enhancing the safety of children travelling to, from and around schools. Find out more about the Guidelines for Road Safety Around Schools.

The Safer Roads Primary Years Safer Roads Resource Professional Development for Teachers

The Safer Roads Primary Years resource aimed at year 3 to year 6 students was launched in the Territory this month. This resource provides teachers with interactive teaching and learning strategies to implement a road safety program in their classroom. Free professional development (PD) sessions are being provided across the Territory targeting primary school teachers. Dowload an information and registration form for PD in Darwin, Palmerston and Rural (Word 50Kb) or Katherine and Alice Springs (Work 50kb).

Proposed introduction of new national child restraint laws for the NT

The Northern Territory Government has supported the national adoption of new child restraint laws. In giving its support the NT Government recognised there are a number of issues to be resolved during the development of the new laws. RADD ImageIndigenous Road Safety Ad

RADD (Recording Artists, Actors and Athletes against Drink Driving) have recently produced a television community service announcement about drink driving featuring the personal stories of Alwyn Davey, Andy McLeod, Austin Wonaeamirri, Charlie Maher, Daniel Motlop and Steven Motlop. The players draw attention to the need for individuals to be responsible, keep friends and family safe, and ensure their own safety from something so easily avoidable. The 90 second ad will be aired across most free to air TV stations in the NT. The ad and footage from the media launch can viewed via the RADD YouTube channel with comments from Andy McLeod, Charlie King, Tony Frawley and Peter Rubinstein. A newspaper article also appeared in the NT News.
