- Procedures for Managing Misbehaviour

(The Procedures are to be read in conjunction with the Code of Conduct for School Bus Travel)
Each year students going to and from schools in the Northern Territory undertake over 1 million bus trips.
Most students behave appropriately most of the time. However, misbehaviour by some students can make travel unpleasant for their colleagues, disrupt the driver, result in damage to vehicles or, in extreme cases, put other passengers and road users at serious risk.
To help ensure that school students behave sensibly and safely, the Department of Planning and Infrastructure, together with operators, schools and police, have developed codes of conduct, codes of good practice and procedures for managing misbehaviour.
The codes are guidelines for students, parents and carers, it forms the basis for the specific rules to manage behaviour on buses on ferries and at Interchanges. They also include procedures for operators, drivers and schools.
Drivers are responsible for the safe carriage of students travelling to and from school in cases of student misbehaviour, the driver will follow the set procedures.
Depending on the nature of the misbehaviour, this may involve simply cautioning the student on the spot, formally recording the misbehaviour as part of the driver’s own record, or immediately reporting the incident to the operator for follow up, which may lead to a ban on the service.
Most students will already behaviour appropriately and by continuing to do so help ensure that all passengers have a comfortable and safe journey.
